Unschooling

Lately, our family has been watching Netflix’s Family Reunion. It’s a cute modern family show with storylines that incorporate all ages. The grandparents are the Pastor and First Lady of a church and that’s REAL familiar to our family. And the parents have a progressive bent, so that too is familiar.

So Mighty and I are watching this with my sister. In the first episode, the son, his wife, and their four children return to Georgia for a family reunion. Now Grandma done told them that children are not allowed in the parlor. But the kids go in there anyway, end up fighting, and break a whole bunch of stuff.

The grandparents are appalled and ask the parents if they are going to punish the kids. The mother says of course and asks what should be an appropriate punishment. The grandfather says spare the rod, spoil the child. The mother explains that she was talking to the children and “as conscious parents, we believe it’s more meaningful if they pick their own punishments.”

Mighty looks over at me and says, “my Mom’s like that”.

I have been easing on into direct conversations with Mighty about this deschooling, unschooling, parenting stuff. I already said I ain’t mature enough. I ain’t quite ready to be held accountable. *scared*

But she sees the way we are changing in how we interact with her. She asks me about the books I’m reading. She ALWAYS shows up to the RFP support group when I’m trying to talk about MY feelings.

So she be knowing.
